Guard My Soul

Ryan Stevenson’s song Eye in the Storm speaks to my core. Reminds me of so many experiences on my journey…in the middle of the war – the abuse I witnessed and endured in childhood and as an adult and being a young mom with decisions of adults to make…when my sails are torn – relationships ripped apart at the seems which feels so much like the heart being ripped from deep within…When the solid ground is falling out from underneath my feet – My daughter being ran over by that motorcycle; times when my kids face hardship or challenge that I can’t fix for them…In the eye of the storm – sitting as low as we could go underneath 3200 sq ft which was our home for only 13 months as it crumbled on top of us in the eye of the storm

And yet…You remain in control– God brought me through those battles and I became stronger for them as He guided and provided the light for the way; You guard my soul – God comes to where I am when I leave Him and He brings me back. He doesn’t wait on me, but runs to me and pulls me from the pit and puts my feet on solid ground (Psalm 40); You alone are the anchor – He restores my heart to love and trust again, He restores relationships and my cup runs over with love; Your love surrounds me – The presence of the Holy Spirit was alive and real under that stairwell in that tornado, the suvs being brought in gave us space, a text message warning awakened me, we kept electricity to hear the news, our roof was blasted rather than weighing down our rubble while so many of our precious neighbors were trapped for hours by that weight and we got out through what we remembered as a white door when no door was there, and He brought that tiny egg from someone’s home and placed it under my roses -unbroken…just as I remain, the egg remained and my soul shall remain even though I am flawed for He Guards My Soul.

I could write a tragic story and I could write a beautiful love story…both are true as they intertwine to by my life story. Just as I held my arms in the rain after that tornado and sang and praised, this song brings us to praise even in the valley. In the end it is all that matters and what remains – the soul.

In the eye of the storm, You remain in control
And in the middle of the war, You guard my soul
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn
Your love surrounds me in the eye of the storm
When the solid ground is falling out from underneath my feet
Between the black skies, and my red eyes, I can barely see
When I realize I’ve been sold out by my friends and my family
I can feel the rain reminding me
In the eye of the storm, You remain in control
In the middle of the war, You guard my soul
